Platform for success
JCU gave Gerard Byrne the foundation to explore careers in government, defence, and business – proving you never know where your degree might lead
From the boardroom to the base and everywhere in between, JCU alum and sessional lecturer Gerard Byrne has used the skills nurtured during his Bachelor of Commerce studies to drive real-world change.
Gerard chose JCU when the University was still young and said the choice was personal and practical. “I think it was probably the reputation, proximity, and it was sort of new and any other university was in the middle of concrete,” Gerard says.
He says the most enduring lesson he took from his time at JCU was to be inquisitive.
"The most important thing I probably took away for my future career was actually to ask people questions.”
From Townsville to the world
Since those early days at JCU, Gerard has forged a career that spans government, business, defence, and education. He has held senior leadership roles across state and federal governments, earned recognition for his expertise in disaster management and recovery, and been awarded for his leadership and community service.
Alongside this, Gerard built a parallel career as a Navy reservist, travelling internationally to deliver specialist training, while also becoming an authority on grant management for not-for-profit organisations. Today, he continues to give back as a business owner, board member, author, and sessional lecturer at JCU, helping to shape the next generation of leaders.
“Both my siblings and my parents were very community orientated. My father was a small business owner. I grew up in that environment where community was important,” Gerard says.
That dedication to his community, in both his professional and private life, has seen him honoured with countless awards, the latest being a Service Medallion by CPA Australia for 40 years of service to CPA Australia and the Australian business community. He has also received the Prime Minister’s Award for Outstanding Leadership and Queensland Premier’s Management Award.
After completing his studies at JCU, Gerard went on to complete Post Graduate studies at RMIT, Griffith University, and the University of Queensland. He was subsequently awarded Fellow, CPA Australia and Fellow, Australia Institute of Management.
Gerard attributes his career success to the support and encouragement of JCU staff during his time at the institution, particularly Auditing Lecturer, David Back, and Management Accounting Lecturer, Malik Mirza.
Connection continues
Gerard has maintained his links with JCU over the years including as a Sessional Lecturer in the JCU MBA Program specialising in Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Leadership, Change Management and Corporate Strategy as well as previous roles as director Business Development and as a representative for the Australian Deans of Business Schools Group.
Throughout his career, Gerard has been at the forefront of some of Australia’s most significant challenges - from being involved in a Royal Commission to leading the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries’ recovery efforts after Cyclone Larry to guiding the rollout of the NDIS in North Queensland.
A life of service
During his time with the Navy, Lieutenant Commander Gerard Byrne (Rtd) was deployed several times for bilateral training exercises both in Australia and abroad. His areas of expertise were asymmetric warfare, advanced weapons systems, and managing strategic resources and operations. He also served short attachments with the American NCIS in Hawaii and the Australian Army before retiring in 2018.
In recognition of his expertise in small business, in 2022, Gerard was appointed to a two-year term on the Queensland Government Small Business Ministerial Advisory Council. He previously served for four years on the CPA Australia Public Sector Centre of Excellence, Canberra, and three years on the NDIS National Mental Health Advisory Forum in Melbourne.
Gerard says he remains indebted for the start in life JCU afforded him.
