Breaking the burnout cycle

Finding balance isn’t about your workload

It’s the start of a new study period: new folders, colour-coded planner, and maybe a new digital set up. This is your organised era.

Then week five hits, and you have 25 tabs open, and you can’t remember which one held the quote you swore you would reference later. Your motivation dips and somehow your study routine has left the building. That loss of drive? Yeah, that’s burnout.

Everyone hits a wall sometimes. It is a sign that you care about what you are doing, not a failure. This is not a moment that defines your academic journey, this your body asking for balance. When you slow down and refocus, you are able to protect your energy and keep the momentum going, building the future you want.

Don’t Wait for the Crash

Burnout is sneaky – it doesn’t announce itself. It starts off with you feeling flat, a little more tired than usual, hard to stay focused. Check in with yourself, when was your last proper meal? Are you sleeping well? When was the last time you got some fresh air? The earlier you recognise the signs, the sooner you can start to feel like yourself again.

Loosen the grip or dial it back

As students, we set the bar high for ourselves, sometimes too high. We don’t need to run at full speed every week. Ticking one or two things off your list is a win. The trick is to focus on steady progress instead of having it all together. Give yourself permission to slow down and pace yourself. Consistency comes from balance, not pressure.

Look after your energy

Rest looks different for everyone. It could look like logging off early, catching up with friends, or going for a walk on the beach. Give your brain a chance to switch off – fuel your body with decent food, lots of water, and rest. Any small act of self-care counts, when you are able to take care of your body, your mind follows. Every bit of rest helps you to refocus and get your energy back.

Stay connected, stay supported

Recognise you have support around you. Talking to someone can make a huge difference.
