About Sport and Exercise Science

Sport and exercise science professionals have the expertise and skills to help people improve their overall health through training and exercise. Students learn the scientific principles underlying the benefits of physical activity as they study in world-class facilities. You’ll learn how to design exercise programs that consider your future clients’ fitness levels, existing health conditions, physical goals, and their needs for improving their fitness.

Develop a strong understanding of the processes and mechanisms underlying human physical activity. You’ll learn the fundamentals of human anatomy, as well as exercise, fitness, health, and training outcomes. Build foundational knowledge in areas such as sport and exercise psychology, physiology, motor control and biomechanics.

Gain in-depth knowledge of sport and exercise science as you study in state-of-the-art facilities, including JCU’s Exercise Testing & Rehabilitation Clinic the Movement Analysis Lab, and the Cowboys Community, Training and High Performance Centre. Attain first-hand experience and put your knowledge into practice with sport and exercise placements. Your practical experience will equip you to identify your future clients’ problem areas, design effective exercise programs for athletes and sporting groups and empower your clients to incorporate exercise into their overall wellness plan.

Benefit from JCU’s strong focus on the relationship between exercise and health in rural, remote, and tropical living environments. You’ll be equipped to work in diverse settings and help a range of future clients, from elite athletes or athletes in your local sporting community to non-athletes needing prevention, maintenance, or improvement-focused training.

Sport and Exercise Science graduates pursue careers in various areas such as the fitness industry, where you could be a fitness centre manager or an accredited exercise scientist, or in corporate health, where you could work in government health departments. You could take on consultancy positions in health education as well as community health clinics and organisations. In sport science, you could be an accredited sport scientist, biomechanist or a research officer. You could also find employment in sports management, sports coaching, sports journalism, and occupational health and safety.
