What is Mathematics?

Mathematics is an enabling science. It builds a strong foundation for the function of much of the world around us.

Discrete mathematics underpins computer science, which is surely one of the most diverse applications of mathematics in the contemporary world. From algorithms to coding and everything in between, we would be unable to run our lives through technology without mathematics.

Mathematical concepts are essential to almost every other scientific field, as well as to disciplines including engineering, technology, medicine and finance.

Meanwhile, other branches of mathematics, such as linear algebra and probability, have been specifically selected for study as part of the JCU Mathematics Major due to their broad relevance and importance to many different commercial and research activities. These include advancements in the fields of data science and engineering.

There are innumerable real-world uses for mathematics, which plays a role in the design of everything from digital security to GIS mapping and so much more.

Even though computers may handle most of the complex calculations these days, a solid understanding of mathematical techniques, data analysis and multivariate statistical methods will enable you to add value and standout in your professional pursuits, whatever they may be.

What does a mathematician do?

Mathematics is integral to numerous fields, and many people will use maths in their jobs regularly without having the word ‘mathematician’ in their job title.

Maths is all about problem solving. A mathematician thinks about the way things work and why things happen. If you are working with mathematics in your job, you are probably thinking about the governing operations and processes that are going on in any given scenario and using that knowledge to answer many different types of questions.

Mathematical modelling takes place in all sorts of professional contexts. A mathematician who can convert a seemingly complex problem into a much simpler one will be highly valued in the workplace. Using maths you may employ analytical, graphical and computational tools to analyse the behaviour of models under changing conditions.

As a mathematician, you may also engage in mathematical optimisation, which involves using programming models to select the best element from a series of options. In this way, maths becomes a strategic enabler in a business. You may be tasked to determine the most cost-effective options for a product or service, develop a plan to use resources more efficiently, maximise logistics capability or provide analysis to inform potential mergers or acquisitions.

What jobs are there in mathematics?

While you may not see lots of job advertisements for roles with ‘mathematician’ in the title, you will no doubt find that maths skills are essential in many different jobs, especially in the engineering and science professions.

As a mathematician, you can work in sectors including information technology, business and finance, astronomy and space exploration, climate study or meteorology, animated films, cryptography and applied research.
