James Cook University has welcomed a delegation from Guangdong Ocean University (GOU), following an earlier visit to GOU by Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Iain Gordon.

GOU is located in Zhanjiang City, Guangzhou province.  Zhanjiang and Cairns have been sister cities since 2004.  This collaboration is supported by both Cairns Regional Council and the Zhanjiang Municipal People’s Government.

The two universities have earlier signed a Memorandum of Understanding and an Overarching Articulation Agreement, with a view to collaborating in several areas.

An important part of discussions during the delegation’s visit to Cairns was to identify some courses for articulation, which would enable GOU students to undertake part of their studies at JCU. Plans are now underway to articulate GOU courses into JCU’s Bachelor Business (Financial Management and Management) and the Bachelor of Science (Marine Biology and Aquaculture Science and Technology).

There are also plans for a staff exchange, in the fields of marine science and aquaculture.

During their visit the delegates from Guangdong Ocean University toured JCU’s Smithfield and City campuses.
