James Cook University is giving the Townsville community a chance to meet members of the USA’s national rugby league team while they are in town for the Rugby League World Cup (RLWC).

The University will be hosting an American-style pep rally to share the excitement of the American sporting spirit with Townsville and to encourage Team USA to learn more about Australia and North Queensland.

When:           4pm – 7pm, Monday 23 October

The pep rally will be a chance for the community to meet world-class rugby league players and to experience the all-American pep rally, usually own seen in movies and on TV.

The rally will also include NRL activities with the Cowboys U20s, Hands on Wildlife, American gridiron versus rugby league trivia, live music and cheerleader performances.

Sydney Jones, RLWC Host City Ambassador and JCU Student Association Vice-President said she hopes Townsville will show the visitors some North Queensland hospitality.

“I’ve lived in Townsville for three years and seen first-hand how much the community gets behind the North Queensland Cowboys, I’d love for them to share that spirit with Team USA,” she said.

“There’s a strong American expat community here and this is a great chance for us to engage with the Townsville community and culture of Rugby League. We hope that because the Australian team isn’t playing in Townsville that locals will adopt Team USA as their second team.”

Students from the United States are the largest group of international students at JCU’s Townsville and Cairns campuses and they are looking forward to welcoming their compatriots and sharing some American spirit with the Townsville community.

The event is being run by JCU Event Management students in conjunction with the Rugby League World Cup.

Members of the community can RSVP for the rally on Facebook to go into the draw to win a football signed by Team USA.
