3385 new places at JCU, with more to come

While 5791 students have sought a place at JCU this year, a total of 3385 offers have been made to date. This combines the total offers made in today’s round and offers made earlier. Additional offers will be made in coming weeks.

Changes in the offers process have seen JCU offering places in weekly rounds since late last year, with more offers due between now and Orientation Week in February.

With this and earlier rounds combined, JCU is offering a total of 2329 places at its Townsville campus and a total of 852 places have been offered to date at the Cairns campus.

A further 204 places have been offered in external courses, and at JCU study centres in Mackay and Mt Isa.

JCU Vice Chancellor Professor Sandra Harding said applicants should now consider their offer and their plans, including whether their preferences had changed.

“This is such an exciting time for anyone looking forward to going to uni, but it can be also be quite daunting. I encourage you to contact our advisors if you have any questions about the decisions ahead of you. They are ready to provide all the advice and assistance you need,” she said.

Across Queensland first-preference applications declined by an average of 4.6 per cent.  JCU attracted 5791 first-preference applications for Semester 1 in 2018, representing a decrease of 5.4 per cent compared to this time last year.

“That reflects a number of factors, including economic and social change in the state and in our region,” Professor Harding said.

“As far as changes in preferences are concerned, earlier trends in which we have seen health and science-related fields growing steadily are being repeated.”

Nursing continues to grow, with 426 offers being made across JCU’s campuses including Townsville, Cairns, Mackay, Mount Isa and Thursday Island, as well as to external students.

The University received more than 2486 first-preference applications for Medicine; 348 first-preference applications for Dentistry; and 256 first-preference applications for Veterinary Science.

Applicants can check their offers from 8.30am today (Tuesday 16 January) on the QTAC website. JCU will email offers to successful candidates from 9.30am.

Director of Student Services Jodie Midson reminded applicants that they still have further options after this major round of offers.

“We will be making further offers in most courses later this month and in February,” she said.

“If you’re not sure about the choices available to you, or you’d just like to talk through your options, now’s the time to call JCU and speak with one of our advisers.”
