A partnership between James Cook University and Xi’an University of Technology (XUT) will see a new International Engineering College opening in China’s central north in September.

The development recently received approval from the Chinese Ministry of Education under a program designed to foster collaboration between Chinese universities and international higher education partners.

“At XUT and in the Xi’an region there is a focus on growing their engineering and manufacturing sector, which makes this a logical and exciting collaboration for our staff and students in Engineering and Data Science,” JCU Vice Chancellor Professor Sandra Harding said.

“Ministerial approval is very welcome news. It means that, after two years of planning, the college can be up and running for the beginning of China’s 2020 academic year in September.”

XUT will establish and operate the College, with input from JCU staff on course design and content. JCU lecturers will deliver some subjects – face-to-face, when travel restrictions are eased.

“Students and staff will benefit from sharing ideas, knowledge and fresh approaches, each learning from the other’s strengths,” Professor Harding said. “We also look forward to developing joint research projects and the potential for future student and staff exchanges.”

The International Engineering College will offer:

Bachelor of Engineering (honours) in Civil Engineering

Bachelor of Engineering (honours) in Mechanical Engineering

Bachelor of Engineering (honours) in Electronic Systems and Internet of Things

Bachelor of Science in Data Science

Master of Engineering (Professional).

XUT is located in Xi’an City, one of the four great ancient capitals of China and home to the Terracotta Warriors.  The University is an important research centre for water engineering, equipment manufacturing, and the printing and packaging industries.

JCU was assisted by Australian Education Management Group in the development of this significant partnership.
