JCU on display at 2025 Cairns Open Day

James Cook University will open the doors of its Cairns Nguma-bada campus (Smithfield) this Friday, July 25, to showcase the University’s world-class educational programs and research.

Visitors can experience a wide range of presentations and campus tours, including immersing themselves in a virtual reality environment, the CAVE, at JCU’s Ideas Lab.

The day begins with a Schools’ Open Day from 9am-1pm, with hundreds of students from Far North Queensland touring the campus’ facilities and talking to their future lecturers in a relaxed environment.

The action continues from 3pm-6pm, with members of the public encouraged to visit the campus to see first-hand what JCU in Cairns offers.

All visitors will also have the chance to take guided tours of on-campus accommodation, as well as tours of the state-of-the-art facilities, and it’s the perfect way to know what your future at JCU could look like.

Visitors can also learn about JCU’s new Clinical Teaching and Education Centre (CTEC), due to be completed later this year, where health students will train using the latest clinical equipment and cutting-edge technologies.

JCU Vice Chancellor Professor Simon Biggs said Open Day is a chance for future students and their families to experience a taste of life at JCU.

“The University is delighted to give the Far North Queensland community a unique look at regional Queensland’s premier tertiary education institution,” he said.

“It’s always a great thrill to throw our doors open and let members of the community get an in-person look at the wide range of study and research fields we offer.

“There’s no shortage of exciting activities on the day and it’s a great chance to showcase the exceptional opportunities we provide for our students.”

This year’s Cairns Open Day also features a new event, Biz and Bites in the Tropics, which kicks off at 5.30pm and is a networking event bringing together local industry, alumni and future students to explore regional careers.

There will also be live music from Anais Campbell and food available from Boxhead Burgers.
