New JCU students excited for O Week
James Cook University has welcomed around 2,000 new students across our Cairns and Townsville campuses, who will dive into a week of celebrations to mark the beginning of their studies.
JCU Vice Chancellor Professor Simon Biggs said it is an exciting time at both campuses as staff prepare to welcome new and returning students for Trimester 1 Orientation Week from Monday, January 19th.
“It’s a special time for our new students, who are no doubt excited and enthusiastic about beginning their JCU journeys,” Prof Biggs said.
“O Week offers the perfect opportunity for new students to see the campus and experience the best of what JCU has to offer, both academically and socially.
“Our aim is to ensure they are well prepared with all the tools and support they need to succeed in their studies.”
New arrivals at JCU’s Bebegu Yumba campus in Townsville and Nguma-bada campus in Cairns can look forward to a lively Trimester 1 O Week, packed with campus tours, pancake breakfasts and lunches, market day activities and introductions to all the wonderful courses on offer.
“O Week is a great opportunity for students to network and make new friends,” said Prof Biggs.
International students from American, African, Asian and Pacific nations will all begin their JCU journeys in Trimester 1.
“We’ve seen strong growth in international students wanting to study in the health sciences, with Bachelor of Dentistry, Batchelor of Nursing Sciences and Masters of Social Work being the most popular courses,” said Prof Biggs.
“We are also pleased see increased domestic student demand across a range of courses at JCU compared to the same period last year, in both Cairns and Townsville.
“O-week underscores JCU’s commitment to support our students and provide quality education and research that continues to have real-world outcomes.”
O Week will conclude this Friday before Trimester 1 classes begin on Monday, January 26.
