JCU and TAFE Queensland streamline transition to uni
James Cook University and TAFE Queensland are strengthening their partnership to make it simpler and quicker for more students to get a university degree.
JCU and TAFE Queensland have signed an Agreement to streamline the process for students to receive Advanced Standing for study already completed at TAFE Queensland in a range of diplomas. Advanced Standing allows previous study – in this case through TAFE Queensland – to count toward courses within a bachelor’s degree.
Students who have completed specific TAFE Queensland courses can get Advanced Standing for degrees such as the Bachelor of Social Work, Bachelor of Education, Bachelor of Business, Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Tourism, Hospitality and Events, Bachelor of Information Technology, Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Nursing Science.
With this agreement between JCU and TAFE Queensland, students can reduce their time at JCU by up to one year.
JCU Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor Education Professor Ron White said the agreement between the University and TAFE Queensland would make the transition to uni simpler and more efficient.
“Recognising some of the skills and competencies learned by students in appropriate TAFE Queensland diplomas means that certain students can more easily apply for Advanced Standing and that means a shorter timeframe to get their bachelor’s degree,” Professor White said.
“This is a commonsense way JCU and TAFE Queensland are working together to streamline the process of moving from TAFE to university so students can upskill and take the next step in their education journey to help them get the career they want.
“We want to make getting a university education as accessible as possible and remove barriers for people to get a degree, while still retaining a strong focus on core competencies and academic excellence.”
TAFE Queensland Chief Executive Officer Tim Rawlings said the agreement reflected the strength of two major North Queensland education providers working together for the region.
“This agreement is tertiary harmonisation in action – TAFE Queensland and JCU working as a more connected education system to create stronger opportunities for students, employers and communities across North Queensland,” Mr Rawlings said.
“When vocational and higher education work together, students can build their skills through pathways that support them to establish rewarding careers here in the region.
“For local employers and communities, that means a stronger pipeline of skilled people who understand the region and are ready to contribute to North Queensland’s future.”
The streamlined process in the agreement will run until at least the end of 2031.
