From Uncertainty to Discovery: Sophie McIntyre’s Path in Biomedical Science

Like many high school graduates, Sophie McIntyre finished school without a clear vision for her future. Healthcare appealed; her mother is a nurse and her father a biomedical technician, but neither career pathway felt quite right.

“I was scrolling through the QTAC book on the day university preferences were due and JCU's biomedicine course jumped out at me. I hadn’t heard of the degree before, and I wasn't sure exactly what it would involve, but it seemed perfect,” she said.

From the outset, Sophie embraced the content taught in biomedicine, drawn particularly to microbiology and genetics, as well as the exposure to research.

But it was no dream run. Sophie says she struggled with the coursework in her first year, barely scraping by. Over time, she developed the discipline needed to meet the demands of the often-challenging program.

“I had undiagnosed ADHD throughout my undergraduate degree, so I think that made it even more difficult to judge how much work I needed to do to pass the course. I didn’t let it stop me though. Yes, it was a huge challenge, but I was really passionate and just kept going," she says.

“I needed to up my game, put more work in, and once I realised that I started excelling, finishing with all high distinctions in my final semester."

A Degree of Opportunity

Sophie says the career pathway for biomedical graduates is vast, and that’s what makes it stand out.

"I think of biomedicine as the land of opportunity. It serves up a smorgasbord of career pathways you can pursue," she says.

"You can start the degree not even necessarily knowing what you're interested in specifically, and you will find your way, you will find the areas of study that speak to you.

“Biomedicine is basically health-focused science, and there is such a call for experts in that area from fields like government, industry, academia, technology startups; you can do research and development or work in a medical lab.

"There are so many wonderful academic and staff in the biomedical degree who are so passionate and want our students to succeed, we're really lucky here at JCU."

Initially intending to pursue a career in a medical laboratory, Sophie changed direction after a conversation with Professor Jeffrey Warner, Academic Head of Biomedical Sciences and Molecular Biology at JCU.

“I did a research placement course in the final year of my undergraduate degree and really enjoyed it. I spoke to Jeff about my interest in research and he was encouraging, he said 'I think you can do this, here is a project that’s available'."

That conversation marked the beginning of Sophie’s Master of Philosophy, focused on tuberculosis, which she completed in 2025.

Tackling Tropical Health Challenges

Eager to pursue further research, Sophie enrolled in a PhD last year, this time focusing on the deadly tropical disease melioidosis. She is already making headway, uncovering clues about what drives — and how to better control — the complex soil-borne disease.

"The increase in Melioidosis cases can be attributed to a lot of factors, the increase in rainfall, flooding and natural disaster events, but also the movement of people. Townsville's population is expanding and people are moving into areas that seem to harbor melioidosis in the soil, so people are becoming more exposed to it. More rainfall means it's becoming more active. We also think global warming has something to do with it, but we don't think that's the whole story," Sophie says.

Sophie says a typical week might involve analysing data, examining soil specimens under the microscope, attempting to grow the bacteria in the lab, or spending days in the field collecting samples.

Once her PhD is complete, Sophie remains open to where her career might lead, with interests spanning agriculture, biosecurity, and governance.

Did she imagine she would one day be working towards a doctorate when she first enrolled in biomedicine?

"I certainly saw myself working somewhere like this university, but I never imagined I'd get to the PhD level. It will be a huge achievement, and I guess I'm really grateful that Jeff stepped up and encouraged me to take this on."
