Postgrad pathways explained
Thinking about going back to study, but not sure where to start? Whether you’re upskilling, changing careers, or finally chasing a goal you placed on hold, there’s likely a pathway to suit you at JCU. That’s because postgraduate study comes in different shapes and sizes.
There’s plenty of info out there, but we understand it might get a bit confusing, so here’s a quick, simple breakdown of what to expect from a Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Master’s Degree, and PhD.
Graduate Certificate (Grad Cert)
Think of a Graduate Certificate as ‘The fast-track starter’. In a nutshell:
- It usually runs 6 months full-time
- Features focused, practical learning in one area
- Is great for upskilling or testing a new field
A Graduate Certificate is the quickest way to level up your skills. It’s ideal if you want a qualification without committing to multiple years of study, and it can often be used as a pathway into further postgraduate study.
Graduate Diploma (Grad Dip)
Perhaps the best way to describe a Graduate Diploma is ‘The step up’. This area of study:
- Usually runs 1 year full-time
- Is broader and deeper than a Graduate Certificate
- Can be a pathway into a Master’s Degree
Think of a Graduate Diploma as the middle ground. It gives you more in-depth knowledge and can help you pivot careers or build on existing experience — without jumping straight into a full Master’s Degree.
Master’s Degree
Studying a Master’s Degree can be thought of as ‘The career accelerator’. With a Master’s Degree, you can expect to:
- Study 1–2 years full-time
- Advance your knowledge and develop specialised skills
- Boost your career progression or earning potential
A Master’s Degree is for those ready to go all in. It offers deeper expertise, often includes research or industry projects, and can open doors to leadership roles or specialised careers.
PhD (Doctor of Philosophy)
A PhD is best thought of as study for 'The research degree’. With a PhD you can expect to:
- Study 3–4 years full-time
- Focus on original research
- Gain the highest academic qualification
A PhD is all about creating new knowledge. You’ll dive deep into a specific topic, conduct independent research, and contribute something original to your field. It’s ideal if you’re passionate about research, academia, or becoming a subject-matter expert.
JCU’s PhD@Work program also allows you to complete your PhD while you work by combining academic research with real-world industry projects.
So, which one is right for you?
- Want something quick and practical? A Graduate Certificate would be a good fit
- Need more depth or a career change? Consider studying a Graduate Diploma
- Ready to specialise and advance? A Master’s Degree is for you
- Passionate about research? Look into studying a PhD
Your path doesn’t have to be linear
There’s no one right way to move through postgraduate study. Many students start with a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma and build their way up over time, using each qualification as a stepping stone.
If you stay within the same study area, your previous postgraduate subjects can often count towards a Master’s Degree — meaning you can build on what you’ve already done and potentially reduce your overall study time. Others may jump straight into a Master’s Degree, or even progress from a Master’s Degree into a PhD if they discover a passion for research along the way.
Did you know? Your previous experience and existing skills might help you fast-track your studies. Check your eligibility to apply for Recognised Prior Learning, which counts both formal and informal learning as credit towards your postgraduate degree.
Key tip: Look into scholarships and Commonwealth Supported Places when exploring your area of study.
