Your quick guide to understanding CSPs

You may have heard of something called a Commonwealth Supported Place. If the details sound a bit confusing – or you’ve only seen bits of info here and there – don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. We’ll break it down for you.

In a nutshell, a CSP is a government-subsidised place that can significantly reduce your tuition fees. Read on to find out more, and discover if you are eligible.

So what is a CSP?

A Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) means that the Australian Government covers part of your fees. You’re only responsible for paying the remaining portion, known as the student contribution.

To help manage this remaining portion, you can access a HECS-HELP loan, allowing you to defer payment until you’re earning above a certain income threshold. This makes it easier to study now and pay later, once your income reaches a certain amount.

It’s important to check if you are eligible for both a CSP and HECS-HELP. Being eligible for a CSP doesn’t automatically make you eligible for HECS-HELP.

You can study with a CSP for up to seven years fulltime as part of your Student Learning Entitlement (SLE). Select postgraduate and honours courses offer additional SLE, and there are opportunities to access lifelong SLE to upskill, reskill, or start further study later in life.

How to defer your fees

CSPs are available at JCU for most undergraduate degrees.

Can I get a CSP at JCU?

CSPs are widely available at JCU for most undergraduate degrees and for some postgraduate coursework programs, including master's programs, graduate certificates and graduate diplomas.

If you are a domestic, undergraduate student enrolled in a degree or course of study (not single subjects), you are most likely to be eligible for a CSP.

To be eligible, you generally need to be:

  • An Australian citizen
  • A New Zealand citizen (living and studying in Australia)
  • Or an Australian permanent visa holder

You can find full eligibility details on the StudyAssist website, but overall, the criteria are broad and accessible to many students.

What does a CSP at JCU cover?

CSPs at JCU reduce the costs of your tuition. You’ll only pay the student contribution, which varies by discipline. For example:

  • Degrees in law or business may have a higher contribution
  • Fields like nursing, allied health, or environmental science often have lower contributions

Contribution amounts are set by the Australian Government and differ across study areas. So the amount you’ll owe may depend on what you study.

How do I check if a JCU program offers a CSP?

It’s pretty straightforward. To find out if your desired program at JCU is a CSP, you just need to:

  1. Visit the JCU course search page.
  2. Select your program of interest.
  3. Open the program details and look under Fees and Costs to see CSP availability.
  4. Check the Postgraduate Fees section, or contact JCU directly, if you’re looking into postgraduate programs.

Postgraduate students who are already enrolled as tuition fee paying students may be eligible to apply for a transfer to a CSP.

How do I apply for a CSP?

If your chosen program at JCU offers CSPs, here’s how to apply:

  • Submit your application through QTAC (for undergraduate courses), or
  • Apply directly to JCU for postgraduate programs, or where instructed

Once you receive your offer, it will confirm your CSP status. You’ll then need to:

By checking if you’re eligible for a CSP, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Just remember that CSPs are limited, so applying as soon as possible will help improve your chances of a successful outcome. And if that doesn’t work out, you may still be able to qualify for a FEE-HELP loan, scholarships or other financial support.
