Students interested in the science behind disease diagnosis, medical research and modern healthcare now have access to a unique new qualification, with James Cook University launching its Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences – Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine.
The innovative degree combines Biomedical Sciences and Laboratory Medicine in a unique joint qualification that can be completed in less than four years, preparing graduates for careers as medical laboratory scientists while also providing flexibility to pursue further study and a range of health-related professions.
Head of Biomedical Sciences and Molecular Biology Professor Jeff Warner said the course was designed to meet growing workforce demand while giving students flexibility in shaping their future careers.
"What makes this degree particularly exciting is the combination of a strong biomedical science foundation with professional laboratory medicine training, giving students both career-ready skills and the flexibility to pursue a range of future pathways,” Prof Warner said.
“Students will build strong foundations in human biology, molecular and cellular science, microbiology, immunology, physiology and pharmacology, while also developing the applied laboratory skills needed in diagnostic and clinical laboratory settings.”
One Degree, Multiple Futures
A defining feature of the course is its flexibility.
Students can complete the full joint degree and graduate workforce-ready for a career in laboratory medicine, or they can choose to exit early with a Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences and pursue a range of postgraduate pathways.
Prof Warner said this approach gives students the freedom to shape their careers as their interests evolve.
“This provides students with both a professionally focused laboratory medicine pathway and a recognised biomedical science qualification that supports broader health, research and postgraduate opportunities,” he said.
The flexible structure opens pathways into medicine, biomedical research, clinical science, allied health professions and other health-related careers, ensuring students are not locked into a single outcome.
Training for a Career in Modern Healthcare
Medical laboratory scientists play a critical role in modern healthcare, working behind the scenes to help diagnose disease, monitor treatment and support clinical decision-making.
Using advanced laboratory technologies, they analyse blood, tissue and other clinical specimens that help doctors determine the best course of treatment for patients.
Prof Warner said the degree responds directly to increasing demand for skilled laboratory professionals.
“It is an exciting addition to JCU’s health offerings because it responds directly to workforce needs in regional, rural and tropical Australia, where skilled laboratory medicine professionals are essential to patient care, disease diagnosis, outbreak response and public health,” he said.
Graduates may pursue careers in hospital and diagnostic laboratories, biomedical research, biotechnology, clinical trials, public health organisations and government agencies.
Learning by Doing
Practical experience is at the heart of the degree.
More than 80 per cent of core subjects include hands-on laboratory training, giving students experience across disciplines including microbiology, immunology, genetics, physiology, pathology and haematology.
Students begin developing practical laboratory skills from their first year and build expertise throughout the course.
“Practical learning has been built into the degree from the beginning, with students developing confidence in laboratory techniques, quality assurance, clinical reasoning and data interpretation,” Prof Warner said.
“As students’ progress, they will move from foundational biomedical science skills into more applied laboratory medicine training.”
A major highlight of the course is a 16-week professional placement in diagnostic laboratories across North Queensland and Australia.
“A key feature of the full joint degree is professional placement, giving students exposure to real-world laboratory medicine environments and the expectations of professional practice,” Prof Warner said.
These placements provide students with valuable industry experience and can often lead directly to employment opportunities.
From Medicine to Research
The course has also been designed to support students interested in research and postgraduate study.
Students have opportunities to undertake research-focused subjects and projects while developing skills in experimental design, scientific communication and data analysis.
Graduates who complete the Biomedical Sciences component will be well placed to pursue honours, higher degree research and postgraduate health programs, including medicine.
Prof Warner said the degree equips students with a broad scientific foundation that can support a range of future directions.
“The embedded Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences exit pathway provides additional flexibility,” he said.
“Students can shape their study toward professional laboratory medicine, biomedical research, clinical pathways, postgraduate study or broader health-sector opportunities.”
