Using AI at JCU (March 2026 guidance)

JCU distinguishes between approved and unapproved AI tools:

  • Prescribed tools (approved and supported)
Microsoft Copilot and AI-enabled Microsoft 365 apps are JCU’s primary AI tools, with institutional data protection in place.
  • Public / non-JCU tools (not approved or supported)
Tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini can be used for ideation or drafting only if no sensitive or teaching-related content is shared, and outputs are carefully reviewed.

Important:
Do not upload teaching materials, assessment content, licensed resources, or student work to non-JCU AI tools.

For current guidance and approved use cases, see the GenAI Tools at JCU page.

What if I need to purchase an AI tool?

Non-JCU tools must undergo licensing, security and cyber‑risk checks before becoming a JCU-prescribed tool.

You can use the Digital Purchase Approval Request to seek approval.
