This program is designed for health professionals to gain in-depth knowledge and skills for careers in health professional education. The Graduate Diploma of Health Professional Education provides you with the knowledge, skills, and competencies to improve clinical teaching in all health professions including medicine, nursing, dentistry, and allied health.

This course is designed to provide health professionals with an understanding of specific strategies related to teaching in clinical settings. Clinical teachers are being recruited from a wide variety of clinical settings including urban and rural hospitals, general practices, and community clinics.

Clinical teachers are also involved in the teaching of post-registration health professionals who are working towards their professional qualifications, such as GP registrars and hospital residents.

While these teachers have registered qualifications within their disciplines, the majority do not have formal qualifications in teaching. This course is designed to develop educator skills for busy health professionals.

This course is suitable for health professionals to gain in-depth knowledge and skills for careers in health professional education and research. It focuses on teaching and learning in health contexts, and completion of a project in health professional education.

The principal aim of these courses is to provide a sound theoretical foundation and practical teaching skills for those involved in teaching students in the health professions.

They focus on:

  • Theoretical perspectives of health professional education
  • Practical skills for health professional education
  • Development of a conceptual framework for teaching, learning, and research in the health professions
  • Knowledge and skills in assessment, curriculum design, and leadership in health education
  • Evidence-based health profession education
  • Experience undertaking educational research.

Admission Requirements

Course pre-requisites

Registration as a nurse, doctor of medicine or other health professional in Australia; or

Completion of an appropriate AQF Level 7 Bachelor Degree in a relevant discipline, with 2 years relevant experience or equivalent.

Minimum English language proficiency requirements

Applicants of non-English speaking backgrounds must meet the English language proficiency requirements of Band 3a Schedule II of the JCU Admissions Policy.

Additional entry requirements

In some instances students may be called for interview, prior to admission.

Post  admission requirements

For flexible delivery option, computer and internet access is required.

Course learning outcomes

The Graduate Diploma of Health Professional Education enables health professionals working in regional and remote tropical Australia to complete a postgraduate qualification to enhance their teaching and learning skills for students and trainees in all health professions.  The course introduces basic and advanced concepts essential for learning, teaching  and supervising in clinical settings. Graduates will be equipped with skills to become lead educators for their health profession.

Graduates of the Graduate Diploma of Health Professional Education will be able to:

  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge relating to the principles, methods and techniques of curriculum design and implementation that includes an understanding of recent developments in health professional education

  • Critically analyse, evaluate and synthesise models and theories of teaching and learning, assessment, evaluation and curriculum design for learning and benchmarking in health professional education at an advanced level

  • Apply leadership skills and problem-solving strategies for working with clinical teachers in health profession education

  • Interpret principles, theories and methods of medical/health professional education for a variety of audiences through high-level written and spoken English

  • Demonstrate personal autonomy and accountability for own professional development as a “lead” educator.
