JCU Science courses begin with the fundamentals, ensuring you’ve developed the breadth of knowledge necessary to engage with interdisciplinary challenges. Enjoy the freedom to tailor your degree to suit your interests. Depending on your degree and campus, there are a number of specialisations you can explore.

Major options give you the chance to focus on your particular area of passion. There are nine majors in total – Aquaculture Science and Technology, Chemistry, Data Science, Earth Science, Marine Biology, Mathematics, Molecular and Cell Biology, Physics, and Zoology and Ecology. You’ll also have the option to expand your learning, by combining majors, minors and electives to gain a broader understanding of multiple scientific areas.

Our hands-on, practical learning focus means you could be completing field research in unique locations such as the World Heritage listed Daintree Rainforest or the Great Barrier Reef. You’ll learn within our world-class teaching facilities, from knowledgeable lecturers with industry links.

High achieving students with a passion for research can choose to undertake an Honours year. This involves a combination of additional coursework and the development of a personal research project within your field of study. You will hone your research and communication skills as you address an issue in your chosen field and communicate your findings in the form of a thesis.
