I will highlight threats to tropical forests globally and to the Amazon Basin in particular, covering issues such as road and infrastructure expansion, habitat fragmentation and edge effects, fires, environmental synergisms, and global-change drivers.

Bill Laurance's research addresses some of the planet's most urgent environmental challenges. He is a distinguished research professor at JCU, director of TESS, and a veteran researcher who work spans much of the tropical world.  He was formerly a senior staff scientist with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute.
