  • A conceptual framework for teaching, learning, and research in the health professions
  • Knowledge and skills in assessment, curriculum design, and leadership in health education

  • Experience undertaking educational research.

Along with your research projects, examples of core subjects and options from which you can choose include:

  • Teaching for Learning in the Health Professions

  • Leadership in Health Professional Education
  • Innovative Teaching in the Health Professions
  • Health Professional Education using Action Research.

This 1.5 years full-time (or equivalent part-time) Master of Health Professional Education (HPE) is offered online to Australian and international students. It provides you with knowledge, skills, and competencies required to be a leader in improving clinical teaching and educational research in all health professions including medicine, nursing, dentistry, and allied health.

Your qualification will be valued, especially because it's from James Cook University (JCU), a university that is recognised internationally as a leader in rural and remote health, tropical medicine and health in Australia and the wider Asia-Pacific region.

Career Opportunities

You’ll have an advantage after completing this JCU Master’s degree as you will have formal qualifications as a teacher, educator and leader in HPE as well as in your clinical discipline, while other clinical teachers only have registered qualifications in their clinical discipline.

This qualification will lead you to interesting and very rewarding career options. That's because the growing number of students in all health professions means that clinical teachers are required for a wide variety of clinical settings including urban and rural hospitals, general practices, and community clinics.

As a clinical educator, you could also teach post-registration health professionals, such as GP registrars and hospital residents.
