Bachelor of Midwifery

The Bachelor of Midwifery at JCU prepares you for a rewarding career supporting women and families through pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period. Available full-time over three years or part-time equivalent, this accredited degree combines essential theoretical knowledge with extensive hands-on clinical experience to ensure you graduate confident and job-ready.

From your first year, you’ll engage in practical learning through clinical placements across metropolitan, regional and rural Queensland, experiencing a diverse range of maternity care settings. You’ll also develop your clinical skills in JCU’s simulation labs in Cairns and Townsville, building confidence before entering real-world environments.

A unique feature of this course is the opportunity to participate in continuity of care experiences, where you’ll support women throughout their pregnancy journey, including labour, birth and postnatal care. These immersive experiences provide valuable insight into woman-centred care and may include engagement outside of standard hours.

Students are registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) through AHPRA during their studies, and upon graduation, are eligible to apply for professional registration as a midwife*. For more information, please visit Frequently asked Questions for Students.

Work Integrated Learning

Students will complete 960 hours of midwifery placement experience with JCU’s partner health services across North Queensland, including hospitals, midwifery group practice and rural health facilities. These placements provide exposure to a wide range of maternity care environments and support the development of practical, real-world skills.

As part of the course, students will also complete 10 continuity of care experiences with women and undertake at least one placement in a rural health service. These experiences are designed to strengthen clinical capability, build professional networks and prepare graduates for practice across diverse healthcare settings.

To be eligible to attend midwifery placement experiences, you must complete all required pre-placement requirements including but not limited to, required immunisations, Working with Children’s Check (blue card) and National Police check.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Midwifery are eligible to apply for registration as a midwife in Australia, opening the door to a meaningful and in-demand healthcare career.

With experience, you may work across a variety of maternity care settings including public and private hospitals, birth centres, and community health services. Opportunities also exist beyond clinical practice in areas such as midwifery education, research, government, and the broader health industry.

This degree also prepares you for pathways into autonomous practice, including private or group midwifery models, where you can provide continuity of care to women throughout pregnancy, labour, birth and the postnatal period.

Through extensive clinical placements and continuity of care experiences, you’ll graduate with real-world skills and confidence, ready to work across diverse settings including rural, remote and tropical communities.
