ETHICS at JCU

THE IMPORTANCE OF ETHICS

"Ethics and ethical principles extend to all spheres of human activity.  They apply to our dealings with each other, with animals and the environment.  They should govern our interactions not only in conducting research but also in commerce, employment and politics.  Ethics serves to identify good, desirable or acceptable conduct and provides reasons for those conclusions."

National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Research Involving Humans - June 1999

All research and teaching conducted at James Cook University must be conducted in accordance with the National Health and Medical Research Council’s (NHMRC) National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Research Involving Humans, 1999 and the (NHMRC) Values and Ethics: Guidelines for Ethical Conduct in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Research, 2003. Research and teaching using animals are reviewed in accordance with the Australian code of practice for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes 7th Edition, 2004 and the Queensland Animal Care and Protection Act 2001.

Research and teaching must also conform with the University's guidelines: Statement and Guidelines on Research Practice.

The University Ethics Review Committee and its committees, the Human Ethics Committee and the Animal Ethics Committee monitor all ethical considerations associated with research and teaching carried out under the auspices of the University.
