JCU Postdoctoral Fellowships

Owing to budgetary constraints, there will be no JCU Postdoctoral Fellowship round in 2007. It is expected that the scheme will be run in 2008.

Information about the 2007 JCU Postdoc round follows. The awardee of the Fellowship is Dr Christopher Fitchett, for the project "Supramolecular assemblies containing photoactive intervalence centres as sensors for medically and economically relevant trace elements and small molecules". Dr Fitchett will be a member of the School of Pharmacy & Molecular Sciences.


Description
The objectives of the scheme is to enhance the research efforts of the University by attracting highly qualified postdoctoral fellows to work in fields of interest which complement the University's strategic research objectives.

The Fellowship serves as a mechanism for fostering effective and productive group research and for encouraging excellence in individual research. A Fellowship will be offered only in Areas of Research Strength
The primary criterion for the awards is excellence. 

Funding Level
One - two Fellowship/s may be awarded each year. The salary range for the Fellowship is aligned to the Australian Research Council (ARC)Postdoctoral Research Fellowships salary scale.

Duration of Grant
Maximum of three years (Fellows are expected to apply for an ARC or an National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Fellowship for the third year of the award.)

Eligibility
Candidates:

  • should have submitted their doctoral thesis by the nominated closing date for applications;
  • must have less than five years of professional experience since the award of their PhD;
  • must have an excellent research record; and,
  • must be able to undertake research which will contribute to the strategic research direction of the host School.
Selection Process
Heads of School are required to recommend one candidate per discipline from applicants nominating their School as host. Assessors reports are requested for short-listed candidates. The Selection Committee is appointed to make final recommendations on awards for approval by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation).
