The Brisbane and Mt Coo-tha Botanic Gardens, with their lush greenery and diverse plant life, offer a sanctuary where people can escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. To enhance the visitor experience, a group of talented JCU Brisbane students recently embarked on an exciting design sprint challenge to create an innovative app specifically tailored for botanic garden visits, specifically helping visitors find more information about trees and plants found in the gardens.

On Thursday, 27 April , twenty-two students visited the gardens for an on-site workshop with Mr Dale Arvidsson. The students were tasked with designing a user-friendly app to provide visitors with an interactive and informative experience during their botanic garden visit. The ultimate goal was to blend technology seamlessly with the natural environment, enabling users to engage with the garden's plant collections, learn about conservation efforts, and navigate the vast expanse of the garden with ease. A big thanks to Mr Arvidsson for his enthusiasm and professionalism - our students learned a lot about gardens, rare trees, plants and many more.

The following week, Tuesday, 2 May and Wednesday, 3 May, the students were divided into four teams for the best app design competition. The participants of the challenge were a combination of masters and bachelors of IT students.

The Design Sprint Challenge provided an excellent platform for students to showcase their creativity and problem-solving skills while addressing the needs of botanic garden visitors. By blending technology seamlessly with the serene environment of the garden, the resulting app empowered users to immerse themselves in the botanical wonders while gaining valuable knowledge about plant life and conservation efforts. Such initiatives not only enhance the visitor experience but also contribute to raising awareness about the importance of preserving and appreciating nature.
