James Cook University Brisbane students could benefit from the Australian government’s decision to extend post-study work rights for international students that have graduated from an Australian higher education provider.

From 1 July 2023, eligible Bachelor degree graduates will have the right to live and work in Australia for 4 years after graduating, and Masters graduates will have up to 5 years. This is great news for JCUB graduates, who will be able to extend their time in Australia and gain valuable work experience.

This will also support businesses across the country and help rebuild the international education sector following the pandemic. Minister for Home Affairs Clare O’Neil stated, “Enabling students that gain an education in Australia to stay longer and contribute to our economy benefits us all.”

An updated list of eligible courses will be published before the implementation date of 1 July 2023. Graduates on a current Temporary Graduate Visa will also be able to apply for an extension.
