James Cook University Brisbane (JCUB) staff joined with their student association to launch their largest networking event yet – the Career Kickstart.

Held at Customs House, the purpose of the afternoon was to showcase JCUB’s talented students, build professional relationships through starting conversations and to expose the students to real career opportunities.

The Career Kickstart brought together 60 of the universities’ leading academic students and representatives from 17 organisations aligning with the disciplines offered at JCUB. Organisations like BHP, Pricewaterhouse Coopers and Rio Tinto were in attendance.

Loata Qarau, a JCUB student completing a Master of Information Technology and a Master of Business Administration, was voted by her peers in the Student Association to MC the afternoon. After her recent achievements in the BHP Design Sprint and her commitment to the Student Association’s project group that assisted with the planning of the Career Kickstart event – her fellow students all agreed that she was the best person for the job.

Loata praised the phenomenal effort JCUB staff and the Student Association put in to launch the Career Kickstart event and was excited for the event to continue next year and be able to include a wider cohort of JCUB students. She had attended similar events at her previous university and was happy that her peers were given the opportunity to learn how to start a conversation and utilise networking skills that can give a broader knowledge and understanding of the Australian job market and ready them for their careers after university.

The event had an overwhelming response with four on-the-spot job offers and multiple commitments for internships and graduate positions. Juliana Neves Braga, our Joblinx career counsellor, has been overrun with seminar offers from representatives that attended the event!

JCUB takes immense pride in being and continuing to be a hub where innovative companies and skilled students can connect, exchange and work together to strengthen our business partnerships. Following the success of the first Career Kickstart afternoon, JCUB plan to run the event annually.
