It will be a pets’ paradise at James Cook University in Townsville this weekend, as the university’s vet hospital hosts its first “Pets Party”.

There will be a range of fun activities and events for all North Queensland pet owners and their treasured companions, including Make Your Own Pet Rock Stand, and a competitive pet competition, with categories including Cutest, Weirdest, Fluffiest, Smallest, Largest and Best Dressed.

Local radio station 106.3 MIX FM will hold a live broadcast on site during the day.

Dr Margaret Reilly, Director Veterinary Practices at JCU’s Veterinary Emergency Centre and Hospital (VECH), said it would be a great day for pet owners and their furry, feathered, scaly or just plain fun friends.

“We will have a Rotary Sausage Sizzle, colouring-in competitions, and many stallholders, including Pet Heaven NQ, Aussie Pooch and Angel Paws,” she said.

Aitkenvale Veterinary Hospital would be bringing lots of pets, including a horse, and hosting a Junior Vet stand, Western Suburbs Veterinary Clinic will also have lots of giveaways and prizes for visiting their stall.

Other organisations being represented include the RSPCA, Len's Feed Shed, Gorgeous Grooming and Townsville Outdoor Agility Dog Sports, which will conduct agility displays.

“Pet Café, famous for their Bark-a-Lattes and Pupicinos, will be there, and will also be launching their new Home Delivery Service.”

Rosene Sanderson, a retired dog trainer and animal behaviourist, would be on hand to offer advice as well, Dr Reilly said.

“We have over $1,000 in prizes for our pet and colouring competitions,” she said.

“It's going to be a great day, and we encourage everyone to come down and enjoy the atmosphere.”
