The touring exhibition of internationally renowned photographer Joachim Froese will be displayed at James Cook University in Townsville from next week.

The exhibition, sponsored by the eMerge Gallery at JCU’s School of Creative Arts, will show from Tuesday April 30 until Friday May 17.

The exhibition Still Life – Photographs 1999-2011 features a selection of works from four series: Rhopography 1999 – 2003; Written in the Past 2007; Archive 2008; and Tell him it is all a transition 2011.

Over the past 10 years, Froese’s work has concentrated on photographic still life and often explores personal family history. Working in black and white as well as colour, he has developed a unique way to create his images.

His photographic tableaux are laboriously assembled constructs that seemingly defying reality and which question the inherent nature of the photographic image as a reflection of the real.

Community Engagement Officer for the School of Creative Arts Sarah Welch said she was thrilled the exhibition was able to come to the region.

“Froese is an internationally renowned artist who has exhibited widely in solo and group shows across Australia, Europe, Asia and North America,” Ms Welch said.

“I was lucky enough to study part of my photographic degree in Brisbane under Joachim’s tutelage, and can attest to the amazing work he creates. He is so meticulous and I invite everyone in the region to come along and experience his work. He is truly a talented photographic artist.”

The exhibiting artist will travel from Brisbane to attend the opening and speak to the public about his work. Froese will also be holding a number of workshops while he is here for JCU photography students.

Still Life is a touring initiative of the Flying Arts Alliance, a not-for-profit organisation providing visual and media arts development projects and services, has been providing visual arts workshop, exhibitions and services to regional and remote Queensland Communities for more than 40 years.
