Whether you’re into ancient pottery, apps or acting, James Cook University will have plenty to see and do this Saturday at its annual Open Day on its Townsville campus.

Whether you’re into ancient pottery, apps or acting, James Cook University will have plenty to see and do this Saturday at its annual Open Day on its Townsville campus.

JCU’s Open Day is an opportunity for members of the community – whether new to study or restarting study - to get a better idea about courses and career options as well as information about degrees and pathways in a fun, interactive way.

Some of the highlights of the day this year, which is being held on Saturday August 31, include:

Criminology Mug Shots

Talk to current Criminology students and have a mug shot taken. Location: Outside Education Central – Building 134

Education Techy Time

Learn about different Apps, websites and gadgets that you could use to improve in the classroom. Learn about different tools and websites to help you with your learning needs. People are encouraged to bring their own device, if they have one. 10am and 1.30pm

Archaeology Experimental Pottery Making

Enjoy an opportunity to use ancient techniques to recreate pottery from the past. Clay, paddles and anvils will be provided to help JCU’s archaeologists work out how pottery was made in the past. Location: Outside Education Central – Building 134

Science on the Grass

What puts the ‘whizz’ in ‘Whizz Fizz’? Participants can attempt to construct a building using marshmallows and spaghetti and find out if slime always behaves like a liquid. What does it take to launch a rocket in the backyard? Find out the answers to these questions, and why teaching science is an exciting career. Location: Outside Education Central – Building 134

School of Law Moot Court

Members of the public are invited to participate in and watch a ‘Bail and Sentencing Hearing’ starting at 12pm. Location: Education Central – Building 134, upstairs seminar room 102

Career Cluedo

People can find out if they are headed down the right career path, test their skills and speed in our Career Cluedo and possibly win an Apple iPad Mini. Chat to JCU academics about studying law and the different business disciplines and the flexibility of JCU’s new Bachelor of Business degree.

Apple vs Android, who will reign supreme?

Visit IT to find out more... Take part in a LAN (Local Area Network) party with multi-player video game demonstrations and activities throughout the day. Location: Outside Education Central – Building 134

Showcasing the creative exhibition “re.Turn”, a collection of work from the School of Creative Arts and COMVAT alumni. Location: Building 300 courtyard

Sport and Exercise Science

Visitors can talk to JCU experts and find out if they have what it takes to be a sports scientist or elite athlete. Location: Medicine and Health precinct – Building 39

Meet a medicine student and tour JCU’s state-of-the-art anatomy facilities

For those who have ever wondered about the contraptions in a doctor’s office, or are interested in the way the body functions, they can learn all about the course, take a tour of the facilities and get ‘hands on’ in JCU’s labs. Location: Medicine and Health precinct – Building 39

Meet JCU pharmacy experts

Find out about career options and get hands-on making lip gloss – free to take home - and medicine (out of skittles). Location: Medicine and Health precinct – Building 39

Hands-on chemistry

See the rainbow in a pen, write a message like a spy and check out solar power in action. Location: Medicine and Health precinct – Building 39

Volcano eruption

See how a soft drink bottle, some very cold liquid and a little bit of physics can simulate a phreatomagmatic eruption. Location: Science and Engineering area outside Education Central – Building 134

JCU motorsport display

See JCU's own motorsports car being designed and built by JCU’s second year mechanical engineering students. The car will be on display from 10.00am-2.00pm Location: Science and Engineering area outside Education Central – Building 134

Robots in Action

Second year mechanical engineering students will show off their Robot construction skills, created to participate in a national engineering challenge. Demonstrations will take place at 11am, 12 noon and 1pm. Location: Science and Engineering area outside Education Central – Building 134

There are also plenty of tours, presentations and other things to see and do and everyone is welcome.
