JCU Major Partner for first TEDxTownsville event

James Cook University has announced it will be a key partner of the first TEDx conference to be held in Townsville in May.

The theme of the independently produced TEDxTownsville event is ‘Curiosity’, and will feature 11 of the region’s thinkers, innovators, artists and change makers, representing diverse fields such as technology, design, mental health, research and entertainment.

JCU is a major partner of the event and will host TEDxTownsville at its Douglas campus.

James Cook University Vice Chancellor, Professor Sandra Harding said JCU is proud to be supporting the event.

“Townsville is fast becoming a knowledge hub of innovation and activity. TEDxTownsville is another sign that the city is growing in strength and prosperity,” said Professor Harding.

“This partnership is focused on providing opportunities for our students to be involved in creating a future for Townsville.”

TEDxTownsville Licensee, Tania Clarke said, “the event will lead to exciting new ideas, giving the Townsville community an opportunity to share its passion and ideas with the rest of the world, using TEDx as the platform to do so.”

“We received over 45 speaker applications, 40 volunteer applications and have so far received over 100 applications to attend.”

“This is an indication that the Townsville community has been waiting for an intellectually stimulating event like TEDx,” said Ms Clarke.

The TEDxTownsville speaker line-up will be announced weekly in the lead up to the event.

TEDx is a community driven event run by individual volunteers who operate under a license from TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) to spark conversations that matter and provoke connections.

TED was founded in 1984 and its annual TED conferences bring together some of the world’s most fascinating thinkers and innovators.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED created a program called TEDx, where x = independently organised.

TEDxTownsville will be held on 30th May, 2015.

How to attend:

Applications to attend are open until the end of March. Only 100 seats are available and the community can apply via www.tedxtownsville.com – tickets are $99
