Atomic Thunder: The Maralinga Story

60 years after the first British atomic weapons test at Maralinga in South Australia, journalist and James Cook University academic Dr Elizabeth Tynan reveals new insights into the devastating impacts of the testing in her new book, Atomic Thunder: The Maralinga Story.

The tests wreaked havoc on Indigenous communities and turned the area into a radioactive wasteland.

How could a democracy such as Australia host another country’s nuclear program in the midst of the Cold War?

In this meticulously researched and shocking work, Elizabeth Tynan reveals how Australia allowed itself to be duped.

Dr Tynan is available for interviews in the lead up to launch of her book on the 27th of September.
