Scholarship sets students up for success

The QCoal Foundation Scholarship provides a James Cook University student with $10,000 each year for three years to offset the costs of studying.

Final year Bachelor of Advanced Science student and 2020 Scholarship recipient Patrick Jurgens said the financial support has been extremely helpful while he completes his degree.

“It’s been a great safety net. I haven’t had to worry about getting a job to support my studies,” he said.

“It really is piece of mind. I’ve got more time to study which allows me to focus on my grades.”

The 20-year-old said while he was unsure as to which profession he would choose after graduating as there were multiple pathways open to him across a variety of sectors.

“I’ve been looking into potentially doing my Honours and a PhD or maybe going straight into the workforce,” he said.

“There’s also a lot of jobs in mining and commercial labs where I could go on to do further research.”

Originally from Bowen in North Queensland, Mr Jurgens is the first member of his immediate family in decades to attend university.

“My family are very proud and very happy to see me follow my dreams by going to uni,” he said.

Mr Jurgens encouraged school leavers interested in applying for the Scholarship to “be themselves”.

“At the end of the day, you’ve got nothing to lose,” he said.

“Make sure you answer every question on the application thoroughly. Just go for it.”

QCoal Foundation Chief Executive Officer Sylvia Bhatia said the Foundation was proud to be able to continue supporting JCU students through the scholarship.

“Our partnership with JCU is now in its seventh year and we remain impressed by the University’s commitment to supporting students from regional and remote areas and to providing the highest calibre of graduates to work in these areas,” she said.

“Our criteria have remained consistent over the years and as the current skills shortage is more acutely felt in regional and remote locations, QCoal Foundation is keen to continue to support those students who want to work in these communities after graduation.
