2624 new places at JCU, and more to come
James Cook University is seeing an increase in applications for 2023, with 6243 prospective students making JCU their first choice for tertiary study.
In today’s major round of offers from QTAC (The Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre) 1125 of those applicants have received the welcome news of an offer from JCU.
Combining today’s offers with earlier rounds, JCU is offering a total of 2624 places, including 1884 in Townsville and 579 in Cairns, with further offers in external courses and at JCU study centres in Mackay and Mount Isa.
“This is a good news day for all those students whose hard work has paid off, and it’s also welcome news for JCU,” said Professor Maree Dinan-Thompson, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Education.
“We’re pleased to see both domestic and international students returning to campus in greater numbers, as we continue to recover from the impact of COVID.”
“Congratulations on earning a place at the university of your choice. We look forward to welcoming you to campus for Orientation Week next month,” she said.
“I encourage you to make the most of O Week – it’s a chance to get to know the University, your classmates, and all the support that’s available. O Week really does help you make the most of the years ahead.”
In addition to strong demand for traditionally popular courses such as medicine and dentistry, JCU has seen growth in first-preference applications (in both Cairns and Townsville) in courses including law, science and education.
JCU has also seen growth in interest from international students, up by 39.7% compared with 2022. Of 2514 applicants, 1888 have been offered a place at JCU.
For those still waiting for offers, or who perhaps have not received an offer in their preferred course, there are more options coming after this major round.
“This can be a stressful time for students and their families, with lots of big decisions to make,” Professor Dinan-Thompson said.
“Take your time to think through your choices, and talk it though with you friends and family. University admissions advisors are also a good source of advice on how to pursue your goals, even if you haven’t received your dream offer so far.”
JCU will continue to accept applications and will make further offers for most courses until classes begin in February.
