About the Presenter

Karnika Bansal, a Lecturer at the College of Business, Law and Governance at James Cook University, is currently finalising her Ph.D. thesis in copyright law at Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne. Her Ph.D. thesis focuses on performers' rights in copyright law, with an emphasis on the gap in legal protections afforded to performers. To conduct her research, she carried out a comprehensive study that involved collecting qualitative data from India and Australia. She interviewed actors, singers, and copyright lawyers to investigate the intricacies of copyright law and performer protection. She holds a Master of Laws in Intellectual Property from the Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, and a Bachelor of Laws with Economic Honours from Panjab University, India. Prior to moving to Australia in 2017, Ms. Bansal practiced as an Intellectual Property (IP) lawyer at a law firm in India. During her tenure, she assisted the firm's copyright and trademark litigation teams and advised music studios and IT companies on IP contracts and litigation strategies. With a rich background in both the practical and academic areas of IP law, Ms. Bansal brings a unique perspective to her research and teachings in the field of intellectual property law, particularly copyright law.
