In this Master of Governance and Leadership degree, you will study methodologies for the management of complex social issues, legal institutions and operations in the Australian context, and how leadership techniques and ethics can be applied in diverse settings.
JCU’s Master of Governance and Leadership is designed to empower you to pursue professional development in the areas of management and leadership. You will develop an in-depth understanding of leadership in casual, professional and organisational contexts. Study how governance operates on social, political and national levels and develop a micro and macro view of leadership principles and methods at work.
This governance and leadership degree has eight core subjects that cover key topics such as leading organisational change, conflict analysis, sustainable economics, policy analysis and management, and state governance. In addition to these core subjects, you tailor the degree to support your career goals by choosing one of three options: a small-scale research project; pursuing a major (listed below); or customising your coursework, an option that must be approved by your course coordinator.
If you choose to undertake a research project, you will plan and conduct independent research on a topic relevant to your field of experience or a field that you want to pursue. You will create a proposal, critical literature review, ethics and methodology outline, and summary of foundational data before conducting the research project. You will be supported by expert lecturers who will give you guidance and advice relevant to your field of research.
Upon completion of the Master of Governance and Leadership, you’ll be ready to take on leadership and management roles across industries. You’ll have strong skills in applying governance and leadership concepts and strategies to real-world settings and issues. Completion of an AQF level 7 bachelor degree with 4 years relevant employment/work experience* or:
Other qualifications or practical experience recognised by the Dean of the College of Business, Law and Governance, as equivalent to above.
* Employment/work experience: Applicants must have a minimum four (4) years full-time employment/work experience in management, governance or leadership roles.
Minimum English language proficiency requirements
Applicants of non-English speaking backgrounds must meet the English language proficiency requirements of Band 2 – Schedule II of the JCU Admissions Policy.

Supplementary exam for
A student who has failed the final subject towards the award and who gained 40% or more of the marks for that subject, may be granted a supplementary examination/assessment in that subject.
Students may apply for credit transfer for previous tertiary study in accordance with the Credit Transfer Procedure.
Credit may be granted for the following:
* Cognate disciplines: may include specific disciplines such as business, commerce, law and conflict management but may also include any degree where the content is considered relevant to this course.
12 credit points except where a student transfers from one JCU award to another, then credit may be granted for any subjects, where there is subject equivalence between the awards
Credit will be granted only for subjects completed in the 10 years prior to the commencement of this course
Credit gained for any subject shall be cancelled 14 years after the date of the examination upon which the credit is based if, by then, the student has not completed this course.

Students who successfully complete this course including the research subjects RM8101 and RM8102 (and who produce outputs graded at the equivalent of Distinction or better for these subjects) may be eligible to apply for entry to a PhD, and may be granted credit for all subjects completed under this course providing they have met relevant University standards for entry and met credit guidelines.
Students may receive an Award of Recognition in accordance with the Recognition of Academic Excellence Procedure
