Inherent Requirements

Inherent Requirements

JCU strongly supports the rights of all people who wish to pursue a university education, and our courses are designed to promote access and success for all learners.

Inherent requirements provide consistent and clear information so you can make informed decisions for study.

Inherent requirements are different to admission and academic requirements.

Inherent requirements are the identified abilities, attributes, skills, and behaviours that must be demonstrated, during the learning experience, to successfully complete a course.

These abilities, attributes, skills, and behaviours preserve the academic integrity of the University’s learning, assessment, and accreditation processes, and where applicable, meet the standards of a profession.

All JCU students have the opportunity to demonstrate, with reasonable adjustments where applicable, the inherent requirements for their course.

Inherent requirements can be used as a starting point for discussion between you and JCU about the abilities and skills you will need to be successful in a particular course, and how to best achieve the learning outcomes.

Depending on your course, inherent requirements can include certain physical and cognitive abilities, sustainable performance, and communication and interpersonal skills. Make sure you carefully read the inherent requirement statements for your course.

If you are experiencing a disability or ongoing health condition, please contact AccessAbility Services as soon as possible. We can also help you if you have a temporary health condition or disability, such as an injury that is preventing you from taking part in certain activities and aspects of your course or subject. Disclosure can be made to the University at any time during your studies. You will need supporting documentation.

The Disability Standards for Education 2005 is part of Australian legislation that requires universities to make courses accessible to students who are experiencing disabilities, and make reasonable adjustments to enable participation. For further information on how we can help you at JCU please refer to the Student Disability Policy.
