Cyber Security at JCU

JCU has a wealth of important and confidential information that requires protection, including the personal information of staff and students, research data and intellectual property. As cyber-attacks on Australian universities are becoming increasingly common, JCU is investing in a cyber security strategy that includes policy and procedures, technology-based protection and detection tools, awareness and training, as well as robust processes for dealing with and responding to cyber threats.

Did you know that October is International Cyber Security Awareness Month?

Since 2004, October is a dedicated month for the public and private sectors and specific  communities, including the University community, to work together to raise awareness about the importance of cyber security. This year marks the 20th annual Cyber Security Awareness Month and this year the theme is – make it easy to stay safe online.

Most of us spend a significant amount of time online, connected to the internet. Some people are online 100% of their waking hours through multiple devices and (social) media platforms.

During October, we will focus on a different cyber safety tip every week. Making small changes to our behaviours can make a big difference to keeping yourself and your loved ones safe online.

What do to if you have been scammed

Scams can be very sophisticated, with the right conditions and lure, anyone could fall for a scam. You may feel a level of shame or guilt, but please realise the responsibility for the scam is with the scammers. Reach out for support, either to the JCU Cyber Team, IT helpdesk, Student Support services or a friend. Here are some tips to act fast, think on your feet, find help and recover fast.

  • Make sure your passwords are strong and secure and use MFA.
  • Make sure all devices have the latest available security updates.
  • Think about what you post online.
  • Talk about cyber security with your family and friends.
  • Avoid public Wi-Fi when you’re banking or shopping online.
  • Be vigilant about what you share on social media.
  • Treat your personal information like cash.
  • Monitor your accounts for unusual activity or transactions.
  • Don’t use the “remember me” option for passphrase-protected websites.
  • Don’t open emails from unknown sources.
