Intent

To state the eligibility criteria for, and provide procedures to manage, the issuing of, Dean’s Award for Higher Degree by Research Excellence.

Scope

This procedure applies to Higher Degree by Research candidates awarded a James Cook University research doctorate or research masters degree in the previous calendar year.

Definitions

For the purposes of these procedures, the word ‘Award’ means the Dean’s Award for Higher Degree by Research Excellence.

Procedure

1. Criteria for Eligibility

To be eligible to receive a Dean’s Award for Higher Degree by Research Excellence, a HDR Candidate must:

  • have been awarded a James Cook University research doctorate or research masters degree in the previous calendar year;
  • all examiners recommended the thesis be accepted with changes to the satisfaction of the Dean of College;
  • are competitive against the criteria listed at 2; and
  • have been nominated for the Award by the Dean of the College in which they were enrolled.

Note this procedure does not include candidates who received their award cum laude, as this award is dealt with in a separate procedure.

2. Procedures for the Issuing of Letters of Commendation

2.1    Each year the Dean, Graduate Research will invite College Deans/Associate Deans Research Education to nominate a maximum of 10% of eligible graduates (or 1 where 10% is less than 1) for the Award, from a list of provided by the GRS.

2.2    The nomination must address some or all of the following criteria:

  • international recognition of the research work;
  • impact of the research (actual and potential);
  • publications or other outputs (e.g. creative works); and
  • any other recognition of the research quality.
  • have completed in a timely manner
  • external examiner reports

2.3 The Associate Dean of Research Education will provide the names of awardees from their College to the GRS in the time frame specified each year.  The awardees must be endorsed by their Advisory Panel and College Dean.

2.4 The recipients of the Award will receive a letter of recognition from the Dean, Graduate Research at a Graduation Ceremony/other Ceremony or by mail.

2.5 The Graduate Research School will publish the list of recipients on their website.
