Early Retirement Procedure

Intent

This procedure details the process to be undertaken to apply for early retirement, and supports the provisions set out in the Early Retirement Policy.

Scope

This Procedure applies to all continuing Staff Members covered by the James Cook University (JCU; the University) Enterprise Agreement.

Procedure

1. Application for Early Retirement

1.1 Staff Members who are interested in early retirement are urged to seek professional financial, taxation and superannuation advice prior to applying for early retirement.

1.2 Staff Members may discuss their interest in early retirement with their Head of Work Unit as appropriate.

1.3 Applications for early retirement are to be made using the Early Retirement Application Form. Applications require the endorsement of the Head of Work Unit and relevant Deputy Vice Chancellor prior to consideration by the Director, Human Resources (HR). An endorsed application should be forwarded to the Director, HR via Service Now for a determination. Where applications are not endorsed, they will not proceed to the Director, HR for a determination.

1.4 The Staff Member will be advised of the Director, HR’s determination. Where an application is endorsed and not approved, the Staff Member will be advised in writing of this decision and the reasons the application was not approved.

1.5 The Director, HR’s decision is final, and no appeal or grievance will be considered.

2. Processing Early Retirement Incentive Payments

2.1 The Early Retirement Incentive Payment will be made to the Staff Member in the next pay period following separation.

2.2 Other leave entitlements including annual and eligible long service leave will be paid in the next pay period following separation.
