The David Suzuki Scholarship In Natural Resource Management for Indigenous Australians Scholarship is open for you to apply if you:

• Identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander in descent; and
• Are studying any of these degrees:
• Bachelor of Environmental Practice
• Bachelor of Geology
• Bachelor of Marine Science
• Bachelor of Planning
• Bachelor of Business and Environmental Science
• Bachelor of Science (including dual degrees with Arts, Engineering or Law) majoring in:
1. Earth Science
2. Marine Biology
3. Zoology and Ecology
• Master of Science majoring in:
1. Environmental Earth Science
2. Environmental Management
3. Fisheries Science and Management
4. Geology
5. Global Change Biology
6. Tropical Biology and Conservation
• Are enrolled full-time (min 9 credit points per study period).

The value of the scholarship shall be as listed below:

• 5 - year degree = $2,800 per year for 5 years
• 4 - year degree = $3,500 per year for 4 years
• 3 - year degree = $4,666 per year for 3 years
• 2 - year degree = $3,500 per year for 2 years
• 1.5 - year degree = $2,333 per semester

Payments will be made in 2 equal instalments after census date of Study Period 1 and Study Period 2. Please allow up to 6 weeks after census date for payment.

Applications must be submitted on the official application form no later than the date set by the Selection Committee for the year in which the award is to be made. Applicants must submit with the official form, where appropriate:

• A copy of your academic record from any other academic institution, including secondary school; and
• Resume outlining volunteer and work experiences as well as community and extra-curricular experiences.
• A written statement of no more than 500 words outlining:
  1. Your cultural affiliations with North Queensland; and
  2. What impact this scholarship will have on your ability to complete your studies; and
  3. What involvement have you had in the natural resource management sector to date including volunteer work, internships, current work experience etc; and
  4. Why natural resource management is important for North Queensland.

Applications submitted without the relevant documentation will not be considered.
The applicant authorises the Selection Committee to make such enquires as to the applicant's good character and suitability to receive the scholarship, which includes authorization for the Selection Committee to examine the applicant's academic record and seek opinions from relevant members of the academic staff of this University or any other academic institution.

Your application is checked for completeness and eligibility, and you will receive an email confirmation it has been received. After the closing date it will be individually assessed and put forward to a selection committee who will rank your application against others who have applied. Applicants may be required to attend an interview as part of the selection process.

Introduction

Gifted by Dr David Suzuki, the eminent conservationist and scholar, in recognition of the importance of providing Indigenous Australians with the opportunity to play leading roles in Natural Resource Management.  The scholarship aims to assist a talented, Indigenous Australian to obtain relevant university education.

This scholarship is subject to the provisions of the James Cook University Coursework Scholarships, Bursaries and Grants Policy

Value and payment of the scholarship

Selection Criteria

The Selection Criteria are:

1. Academic merit.
2. Involvement and interest in Natural Resource Management field.
3. Impact scholarship will have on ability to complete studies.
4. Preference given to students with cultural links to North Queensland.
5. Preference given to mature-aged students.

Selection Process

The award of the scholarship will be made in the absolute discretion of the Selection Committee, which shall comprise:

• Dean, College of Science and Engineering (CHAIR), or nominee,
• Head, Indigenous Student Services, or nominee,
• Other members as suggested by Chair.
• **OR a pool of appropriate JCU representatives

The Selection committee will be responsible for shortlisting and/or interviewing of candidates.

The Selection Committee will determine all matters relating to the selection of the grant awardee.

Ongoing Eligibility

• The recipient must maintain a course GPA of 4.0 or above.
• The recipient must be enrolled full time.

Conditions of the Scholarship

• At the end of each academic year, a written report must be submitted to the scholarships office, the template will be sent to you.
• If the recipient defers their study, they will no longer be eligible for the award.
• If the holder of the award takes an official leave of absence the award will be terminated.
• If the recipient does not meet the ongoing eligibility requirements, the award will be terminated.

A student may lodge a request for review of decision in accordance with the provisions of the Student Appeals Policy.

Administration of the Scholarship

The scholarship shall be administered by the scholarship's office, on behalf of the Selection Committee.

The funds of the scholarship shall be held in an account in the name of the University and shall be administered by the officer of the University charged with administering the grant.
