Our lab and people
The Clinical Neuroscience Laboratory at James Cook University focuses on making a real-world impact on patients’ lives by focusing on factors related to (brain) health, and investigating biomarkers for early detection of mental health conditions, developmental outcomes/disorders, and /or treatment progress.
Our team focuses on a variety of clinical neuroscience topics. Several are related to utilising neuroimaging amongst other measures for early detection and monitoring of treatment success, e.g., in neonates with higher chances of adverse outcomes (feed & wrap MRI), people suffering from stress and stress-related disorders (EEG), and patients with Multiple sclerosis (MRI). We are also working on interventions, e.g., mindfulness in collaboration with the AMHRA, and developing a brain game for Traumatic Brain Injury patients combating apathy.
To ensure real-world impact, our team consists of clinicians, researchers, and consumers, and strong collaboration with experts in the field. The CNL has close collaboration with the University of Queensland (the Queensland Cerebral Palsy and Rehabilitation Research Centre), the CSIRO (Australian e-health research centre), as well as JCU-wide with the Psychiatric Neuroscience Laboratory led by Prof Zoltan Sarnyai and Prof Mostafa Rahimi Azghadi’s group, as well as the AMHRA led by A/Prof Wendy Li. We collaborate strongly with clinicians at Townsville University and Cairns hospital’s departments.
