As a JCU Master of Philosophy candidate you’ll undertake focussed research in the tropics. Explore and generate new knowledge to meet the social, environmental and sustainability challenges facing tropical communities.
Tailor your program to meet your individual interests as a research student. Your research project is the largest component of your course, and you will be guided by a research advisory academic team. Access a range of coursework, professional development, and modularised learning materials to help support you throughout the MPhil. You’ll be encouraged to present your research, write research publications and give conference presentations.

JCU Master of Philosophy (MPhil) graduates are internationally recognised as experts who discover valuable new knowledge in their fields.
The skills you develop during your MPhil will enable you to develop yourself professionally within your existing sector, or to apply your research, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills to new contexts. Graduates can also continue their independent research in a Doctor of Philosophy.

JCU, with the support of the Australian Government’s Research Training Program, will cover the costs of tuition fees for Australian citizens/permanent residents and New Zealand citizens.
International course fees (PDF, 97 KB) are reviewed annually and subject to change. Student Visa holders must have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of their Student Visa. For more information see Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).
All candidates can also apply for a competitively-awarded stipend to help with living and tuition costs.
A Student Services and Amenities fee is payable per subject up to a maximum amount per year.

The pathway into a JCU Masters of Philosophy degree is to have achieved a Bachelor’s Degree with GPA 5.5 in the final year or demonstrated research experience.
