Intent
To specify the eligibility criteria for the granting of the title of Emeritus Professor.
Scope
This Policy applies to all University Staff involved in nomination for the granting of the prestigious title of Emeritus Professor to eligible candidates upon their retirement or resignation from the University.
Policy
1. Eligibility Criteria
The University Council (Council) will consider the granting of the title of Emeritus Professor to a Professor of the University who, upon their retirement or resignation from the University:
- has occupied a Chair in the University or a position with the rank and title of Professor, for a minimum period of ten years;
- has, during that period, given distinguished academic service, significantly above and beyond the level of service normally expected of a Professor, to the scholarly community and/or to the University community; and
- is recommended for consideration by the Vice Chancellor;
except where, upon resignation rather than retirement, Council considers that the granting of the title would not be appropriate, having due regard to a candidate's likely future career.
2. Special Circumstances
Irrespective of 1 above, Council will consider the granting of the title of Emeritus Professor to any former Professor of the University in special circumstances, if recommended by the University Executive (UE) and the Vice Chancellor (via the Vice Chancellor's Committee).
3. Withdrawal of Title of Emeritus Professor
Council may, at any time and without giving any reason, withdraw the title of Emeritus Professor from any person to whom it has previously been granted. There is no appeal process to such a decision.
