Intent

This policy articulates the definition, finalisation and management of student academic results, including a uniform grading scale for final subject results, confirmation of results and the management of final subject result publication.

Principles

  • The University will have a clear set of student result identifiers, for use across all campuses, and modes of delivery.
  • Student results will be determined through individual academic scrutiny and oversight by a College Assessment Committee to ensure fair and equitable results.
  • Students will receive their subject results in a timely manner to assist in determining course progression and study plans.

Scope

This policy applies to the finalisation and publication of subject results for all students undertaking undergraduate and postgraduate coursework subjects at James Cook University (JCU) in Australia, Brisbane, Singapore and JCU Online.

This procedure does not apply to students undertaking postgraduate research subjects.

Definitions

Except where otherwise indicated in this policy, the definitions used in this policy are found in the Policy Glossary.

Certify - refers to endorsement of results

Ratify - refers to the expression of approval of results.

Result - A final marking outcome for a subject.

Results Publication Date - the date for each study period that ratified subject results are made available to students.

Policy

1. Finalisation and Publication of Student Results

1.1  Each Study Period has a designated Results Publication Date, which is approved by Education Committee for each academic year. The Results Publication Date must be no more than 28 calendar days from the designated End Date for the Study Period. The results for subjects taught in the Study Period shall be released on the Results Publication Date for that Study Period.

1.2 Students will be unable to view or have official communication regarding their subject results whilst a current debtor to the university or have outstanding mandatory training such as Academic Integrity and JCU Respect.

1.3  Student subject results can only be awarded or changed in accordance with the Finalisation and Publication of Student Results Procedure.

1.4  Key responsibilities under this policy for confirmation of results include:

  • ensure the moderation or scaling of marks has been applied fairly, systematically, and for sound   academic reasons;
  • ensure the results awarded reflect the levels of performance of students;
  • ensure that the awarding of the final subject result in a chained subject sequence considers the full chain of subjects;
  • ensure the results awarded are in accordance with relevant University policies;
  • review the results of individual students who have been granted an outcome from the Special Consideration Procedure; and
  • certify to the College Dean the subject results and in doing so confirming the Finalisation and Publication of Student Results Procedure has been followed.

College Deans

  • ratify the results for subject offerings of the College when satisfied that procedures have been followed and the results awarded are in accordance with relevant University policies.

2. Standard System of Reporting Results

2.1  Final Results for Coursework Subjects

The following result codes will be used when awarding final results for all coursework subjects. To receive a passing result a student will need to obtain the relevant grade range for weighted assessment and successfully complete all compulsory assessment items as listed in the subject outline including those that are not weighted:

* Some disciplines may use additional methods for determining grade ranges that differ from the ranges stipulated in the table above, as approved by the College Dean and stipulated in the Subject Outline.

2.2  Interim Results for Coursework Subjects

The following result codes will be used when awarding interim results for coursework subjects, pending the award of a final result:

* If a student has approval for AP and PP concurrently for the same subject, PP will be the assigned interim result to enable longer completion time as per Clause 3 in the Finalisation and Publication of Student Results Procedure.

3. Honours Results

3.1  The following classifications will be used when awarding final results for honours degrees. The contribution of subject assessment items to the honours degree classification is approved by the College Dean and published in the honours handbook and/or subject outlines.

3.2  Ranking within Honours Class I

Rankings within First Class honours are based on the grade awarded for the thesis component of the honours, and are defined as follows.  Any student who has achieved a classification I Honours result, but has not submitted a classification I honours thesis, will be awarded a rank of ID.

4. Review and Appeal of Final Subject Result

4.1  Final subject results are subject to review and appeal in accordance with the Academic and Statutory Decisions Review and Appeal Procedure.

5. Distribution of Results

5.1  The Academic Board will monitor the allocation of results across disciplines.
