The Wolfe Award

The Wolfe Award is open for you to apply if you:

• Are an Australian citizen; and
• Are a commencing student in the year the award is awarded who has not completed a previous degree; and
• Are 25 years of age or older at time of commencement; and
• Reside within the area North of Mackay, South of Innisfail and East of Charters Towers; and
• Are experiencing financial hardship and need financial assistance to attend university; and
• Are studying any of these Bachelor degrees:
  o Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (minimum duration 4 years)
  o Bachelor of Physiotherapy (minimum duration 4 years)
  o Bachelor of Speech Pathology (minimum duration 4 years)
  o Bachelor of Psychological Science (minimum duration 3 years)
• Are enrolled full-time (min 9 credit points per study period).

The value of the award shall be $5,000 per year for the minimum duration of degree paid in equal instalments after census date of study period one and study period two. Please allow up to 6 weeks after census date for payment.

Applications must be submitted on the official application form no later than the date set by the Selection Committee for the year in which the award is to be made. Applicants must submit with the official form, where appropriate:

• A copy of your academic record from any other academic institution, including secondary school; and
• A resume outlining volunteer and work experiences as well as any community and extra-curricular experiences; and
• A written statement of no more than 500 words outlining:
  1. Your background;
  2. Why you have chosen to study this particular degree;
  3. What impact this scholarship will have on your ability to compete your studies;
  4. What involvement have you had in the allied health sector to date including volunteer work, internships, current work experience etc
• Documented evidence of financial hardship based on your answers in the application questions.

Applications submitted without the relevant documentation will not be considered.
The applicant authorises the Selection Committee to make such enquires as to the applicant's good character and suitability to receive the scholarship, which includes authorization for the Selection Committee to examine the applicant's academic record and seek opinions from relevant members of the academic staff of this University or any other academic institution.

Your application is checked for completeness and eligibility, and you will receive an email confirmation it has been received. After the closing date it will be individually assessed and put forward to a selection committee who will rank your application against others who have applied. Applicants may be required to attend an interview as part of the selection process.

Introduction

The Wolfe family has been involved in education for generations. Althea’s grandfather taught at one-teacher schools throughout Queensland and her father also began his career as a teacher in very small schools.

Mr J.A. Wolfe went on to obtain a Bachelor of Science at the University of Queensland, which allowed him to gain position as Science Master and Deputy Principal at high schools around Brisbane.  His next position saw the family move to Townsville where he became the foundation Principal at Pimlico State High School.

Whilst Mr Wolfe concluded his career with an administrative position within the education department, many believed his true dedication was to teaching. Althea credits her father’s progress within the Department of Education largely as a result of a scholarship he received immediately port war that allowed him to attend university. It is because of this opportunity provided to her father that Althea is interested in establishing a similar scholarship for students at James Cook University.

Althea commenced her tertiary education as a foundation student at the University College of Townsville, the predecessor to James Cook University, before relocating to Brisbane to complete the rest of her studies at the University of Queensland. Althea claims her year at the University College was “by far the most interesting year” of her more “modest tertiary education.”

This scholarship is subject to the provisions of the James Cook University Coursework Scholarships, Bursaries and Grants Policy

Selection Process

The award of the Wolfe Award will be made in the absolute discretion of the Selection Committee, which shall comprise:

• Dean, College of Healthcare Sciences (CHAIR), or nominee,
• Team Leader - Outreach, Outreach (Careers & Wellbeing), or nominee,
• Any other members as nominated by Chair.
• **OR a pool of appropriate JCU representatives

The Selection committee will be responsible for shortlisting and/or interviewing of candidates.

The Selection Committee will determine all matters relating to the selection of the grant awardee.

Ongoing Eligibility

• The recipient must have passed all subjects from previous semester.
• The recipient must be enrolled full time.

Conditions of the Award

• At the end of each academic year, a written report must be submitted to the scholarships office, the template will be sent to you.
• The recipient may not defer their start date.
• If the recipient takes an official leave of absence the award will be terminated.
• If the recipient of the award does not meet the ongoing eligibility as specified, the award will be terminated.

A student may lodge a request for review of decision in accordance with the provisions of the Student Appeals Policy.

Administration of the Award

The award shall be administered by the scholarships office, on behalf of the Selection Committee.

The funds of the award shall be held in an account in the name of the University and shall be administered by the officer of the University charged with administering the grant.
