The Daintree Rainforest Observatory offers a rare opportunity to host your group in one of the world’s oldest tropical rainforest systems, where research, education, and nature come together in a truly memorable setting.

Located near Cape Tribulation in Far North Queensland, where the Daintree Rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef, the DRO is a working research station operated by James Cook University. Alongside supporting scientific research and university teaching, the station welcomes workshops, conferences, retreats, field courses, and professional development groups looking for something beyond a standard venue.

Whether you are planning a university field course, leadership retreat, specialist training program, writing retreat, conservation workshop, or small conference, the DRO offers a unique setting that encourages focus, connection, and fresh thinking.

Facilities

The station includes a lecture theatre seating up to 80 people, suitable for presentations, workshops, training sessions, and videoconferencing via Zoom.

On-site accommodation is available for up to 50 guests in shared rooms, with linen supplied, alongside access to a fully equipped commercial kitchen. Catering by a local chef can be arranged for groups of 20 or more.

The DRO operates entirely off-grid on renewable energy, with fresh water supplied by rainwater collection systems that are filtered and UV treated on site. Free High-speed internet is available via Starlink, along with mobile coverage on site.

More than just a venue

What makes the DRO different is the experience of being immersed in the rainforest itself.

The station is surrounded by lowland Wet Tropics rainforest, with direct access to walking tracks, creeks, and the extraordinary biodiversity of the Daintree. The beaches of Cape Tribulation and reef tour departure points are only a few kilometres away.

Groups may also arrange access to the Daintree Canopy Crane, one of only a small number of rainforest canopy cranes in the world. Rising above the forest, the crane offers an exceptional perspective of the rainforest canopy and a memorable addition to workshops, retreats, and educational programs.
