The Australian Tropical Herbarium and the Wet Tropics Management Authority present Australian Tropical Rainforest Plants – Plant Identification Short Courses.

Our courses are open to the public, and teach skills in rainforest plant identification. Our courses are developed for the interested layperson.  We teach how to examine and identify plants using freely available resources.

These courses are ideal for the interested layperson, and will be of special interest to rangers, school science teachers, state and local government land managers and anyone with an interest in tropical Australia’s incredible biodiversity.

The Australian Tropical Herbarium, the Wet Tropics Management Authority and the NT Government are pleased to present our annual Rainforest Plant Identification Workshops.

The rainforests of the Wet Tropics and the Top End are beautiful and incredibly diverse. But that very diversity can pose difficulties – how can we understand and manage these forests if we don’t know the species we’re looking at? Our workshops aims to teach participants the skills and knowledge needed to identify the rainforest flora using free online plant identification tools and hands-on experience.

The workshop is targeted at the interested layperson, and will be of interest to:

  • school science teachers
  • state and local government land managers and rangers
  • anyone with an interest in Tropical Australia’s incredible biodiversity

Details of the courses are as follows.

DARWIN: CAIRNS:CAPE TRIBULATION:

18&19 SEPTEMBER 2025

The 2-day workshop will be
hosted by the Northern
Territory Herbarium, in the
heart of Palmerston. The
course will include a visit to
local rainforests.

26-28 SEPTEMBER 2025

The workshop will be
presented at James Cook
University’s Nguma-bada
Campus in Smithfield, with
daily walks to the rainforests
of the nearby Smithfield
Conservation Park.

5-7 DECEMBER 2025

Workshop participants will
arrive the evening of the 4 th
December at James Cook
University’s Daintree
Rainforest Observatory
research facility, located at
Cape Tribulation. Dormitory-
style accommodation is
included in the price. Please

not require accommodation.

All courses run from 8:30 to 4 each day.

Morning tea and lunches are supplied – please advise of any dietary preferences when
