Creating better health systems for the world at JCU
Why did you choose to study at JCU?
JCU has a prestigious position in the university rankings, and I wanted to study at the best institution to complete my PhD in Public Health. Many experts in Public Health teach at JCU and I know that a degree from this institution means I would hopefully have the chance to obtain a lot of job interviews and possibilities. Once I acquire it, it will unlock doors to exciting destinations and unlimited opportunities.
What has been the highlight of your study experience at JCU so far?
Well, it has all been a great experience. I am a research student and it requires significantly more effort to pull through to the end. However, the journey has been amazing so far due to my distinguished and accommodating supervisors. I have received great supervision from my advisory team, and I will always be grateful to them. In 2021 I experienced the highlight of my study as I was able to publish several papers from my thesis.
What are your career goals after you complete your studies?
My career goal is to be a research consultant or work with the World Health Organization (Traditional medicine section) on how to improve health systems around the world, particularly in developing countries. To achieve this, my research is focused on research about health systems and I am currently studying the quality of traditional medicine integration in the Ghanaian health system. I have also worked as an intern in a university hospital in Ghana and participated in some of local and international health projects as a fieldwork assistant.
What piece of advice would you like to share with any international students considering James Cook University?
If you have a goal and love the tropics, JCU is your best choice. I knew exactly what I wanted to achieve, and JCU is helping me realise my dreams. JCU has enormous resources and excellent teaching staff to help students through their candidature. The school’s application process is straightforward and recruitment is transparent. Also, the international student support team is excellent. The team is very supportive right from the first day of admission to the very end of your candidature. If I had to do it all over again, I would still choose JCU!
