COVID-19 Advice for the JCU Community - Last updated: 5 May 2022, 3pm (AEST)

Many employers use a range of selection tools to help them identify the best candidates for their position. They may use:

  • Screening interviews - often using an automated video system
  • Online psychometric testing
  • Individual telephone or face-to-face interviews
  • Panel interviews
  • Group or team interviews at assessment centres
  • Final interview

Approach your interview positively. This is your chance to show employers what you can bring to their organisation. It is also the chance to find out more about the role and the organisation to help you determine if it is right for you.

The Ultimate Guide to Job Interview Questions helps you prepare for the key questions you often face in interviews. The guide is developed by Pamela Skillings, from the online training site ‘Big Interview’. Pamela has been named ‘a guru in the world of job interviews’ by The Wall Street Journal.

The online interview training site Big Interview combines training and practice to help improve your interview techniques and build your confidence. It is available free for JCU students, staff and alumni.

NOTE: To access additional Big Interview resources for free it is important, when registering, to use your JCU email address.

In addition to interviews, employers may use a range of testing methods for further insight into an applicant’s personality, motivations and abilities. The Aptitude Tests and Assessment Centres information sheet will help you to prepare.

"I used Big Interview to practice and prepare for an automated online interview for a government grad program. It helped me pick up on distracting things I was doing like saying “um” and “errrr” too much. I also kept looking away from the camera, which made it look like I was distracted! I used Big Interview's bank of questions to prepare answers for possible questions I would get in the interview, which definitely came in handy as well."

"Big Interview is the perfect preparation tool for an online interview!  I used  Big Interview to help me with answering general interview questions, getting used to looking at a camera and to remove distracting or nervous habits of my own like saying 'umm' too much or playing with my necklace.  My grad interview was not automated like the practice questions but was in front of a panel of executives through Skype.

This program, I honestly believe gave me an advantage. It allowed me to record answers to a range of different questions at various different levels for multiple positions. The bank of suggested answers to questions also helped me to keep on track and give a professional answer. I was and now am certainly more confident in my ability to sit an online interview thanks to this program!"
Final year B Business/B Arts (Human Resources and Human Services majors) student.
