History of the prize
In 2025 the Anne Deane Prize for English Literature and Athena Deane Memorial Prize were merged to create the Anne and Athena Deane Memorial Prize for English Literature.
The Anne Deane Prize for English Literature prize was founded in 1995 by Mr Alan Deane in memory of Anne Deane, a former student of English at this University and a noted contributor to the development of radio and television. The prize of $100 is Awarded to the College of Arts, Society and Education student enrolled in level 1 English for the first time whose work exhibits the most improvement from the commencement to the conclusion of the level 1 English subject as judged by the subject coordinator.
Athena Deane Memorial Prize was founded in 1974 by Miss Anne Deane and maintained subsequently by a donation by the sons and daughters of the late Athena Deane, member of the Foundation for Australian Literary Studies. Awarded to the College of Arts, Society and Education student enrolled in level 1 English for the first time whose work exhibits the most improvement from the commencement to the conclusion of the level 1 English subject as judged by the subject coordinator.
